FAQ

WHAT SIZE PROPANE TANK SHOULD I USE FOR MY GRILL?

Propane Cylinder must not exceed 20 lb (9.1 kg) capacity, approximately 18¼ inches (46.35 cm) high and 12¼ inches (31.1 cm) in diameter.

CAN I USE VERMONT CASTINGS GRILLS WITH A NATURAL GAS LINE?

For your convenience all Vermont Castings™ Models include the Convertible Valve System™, which makes converting your barbecue from Propane to Natural Gas simple. NOTE: YOU WILL NEED A CONVERTIBLE VALVE SYSTEM KIT– Sold Separately; available at Canadian Tire (Model 85-2261-4).

WHY WON'T MY BURNERS IGNITE?

The "Flow Limiting Device" feature in your regulator may have been activated. Please see page 11 of your User Manual. If the problem persists, please contact Vermont Castings Customer Support.

WHY DO I SMELL GAS WHEN I TURN ON MY GRILL?

Your LP cylinder, hose, regulator, or manifold connections may be loose. Shut off your LP tank valve immediately and perform a leak test and safety check. Instructions can be found on page 10 of your manual. If the problem persists, please contact Vermont Castings Customer Support.

WHY ARE THE FLAMES LOW ON MY BURNERS, EVEN WHEN THE KNOBS ARE IN THE "HIGH" POSITION?

You have likely followed an improper lighting procedure. Please follow the correct lighting instructions, found on page 14 of your User Manual. If the problem persists, please contact Vermont Castings Customer Support.

WHY WON'T MY BARBECUE GET HOTTER THAN 300F WHEN THE KNOBS ARE IN THE "HIGH" POSITION?

This is likely due to a poor connection between the barbecue and the gas source. If you are using LP, this also may mean you are low on propane. If using Natural Gas, you may be using an undersized supply line. To fix, perform a leak test to identify the poor connection. Leak Test instructions found on 10 of your User Manual. If the problem persists, please contact Vermont Castings Customer Support.

WHY ARE MY BURNERS PRODUCING YELLOW, SMOKEY, OR ERRATIC FLAMES, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SMELL OF GAS?

The burner ports, burner venturi, or burner spider guard is likely blocked. Please see page 23 of your User Manual. If the problem persists, please contact Vermont Castings Customer Support.

WHY WON'T THE IGNITION BUTTON LIGHT MY BURNERS, BUT THEY WILL WORK IF I USE A LIGHTER OR MATCH?

There are a few reasons your ignition may not be lighting the burners: 1) The ignition battery is dead 2) The electrod wires for the ignition are not connected or loose 3) Ignition Button wires are not connected, or loose 4) The ignition has malfunctioned. If the problem persists, please contact Vermont Castings Customer Support.

WHY IS THE INSIDE OF MY LID PEELING LIKE PAINT?

The interior lid of your Vermont Castings barbecue is aluminum and is not painted. Baked-on grease build-up has turned into carbon deposits on your lid and is now flaking off.

It should be able to be easily cleaned with dish soap and water applied using a towel or rag.  You should do a burn off before using with food again to ensure that the soap isn’t being cooked into your food.

WHY IS MY BARBECUE MAKING A "POPPING" SOUND?

If you are experiencing a "popping" sound when your grill is on, this likely means you are out of propane or your buners/burner tubes are blocked. If your LP tank is full or you are using Natural Gas, try cleaning your burners. If the problem persists, please contact Vermont Castings Customer Support.

WHY AM I HEARING A "HUMMING" OR "HISSING" NOISE FROM MY GAS CONNECTION LINE?

These are possible symptoms of opening your propane tank valve too quickly. This can also be caused by having a missing or damaged black rubber seal on your propane tank valve. If the black rubber seal is in tact, ensure to open your propane tank very slowly on the next use. If the black rubber seal is damaged or missing from your propane tank, return the tank to the place of purchase.

WHY AM I EXPERIENCING EXCESSIVE HEAT/FLARE-UPS/GREASE FIRES WHEN I USE MY GRILL?

There are many possible causes for these issues. Please see the possible causes and accompanying solutions below:1) There is an excessive build-up of grease on key parts of the barbecue Solution: Thoroughly clean the interior cooking system by seeing pages 23-25 of your User Manual 2). There is an excessive build-up of grease in the front-access grease drawer Solution: Thoroughly clean the grease collection components by or seeing page 24 of your User Manual 3) You are covering more than 70% of the cooking surface of the grill with a topper or cooking sheet Solution: Never cover more than 70% of your cooking surface as it can trap heat and cause overheating 4) You are cooking large quantities of excessively greasy or fatty foods at the same time, or on an already dirty grill Solution: Always thoroughly clean your barbecue before cooking large volumes of food.
